The Battle of Midway is regarded by many historians as the most important operation of the Pacific Campaign of World War II taking place on June 4, 1942 approximately one month after the Battle of the Coral Sea and six months after Japan's sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. This was the first time that aircraft carriers from opposing sides launched strikes against each other. The Japanese deployed 4 large Carriers; the Kaga, Akagi, Soryu and Hiryu in an effort to sink three American carriers; the Enterprise, Hornet and the damaged Yorktown defending Midway Island. Although outnumbered, the US Navy decisively defeated the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) attack against the Midway Atoll, infllicting irreparable damage to the Japaneses carrier force and seizing the strategic initiative. | | | | | | | |
