The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad was chartered on March 8, 1827 and formally was incorporated on April 24, 1827. The oldest Class-1 railroad in the United States. It was immediately handed the task to set up a line from the Port of Baltimore west to a suitable port on the Ohio River. This line was intended not only to provide an alternative method of shipping, but to do it faster than the new and hugely successful Erie Canal. The B&O effort was successful and this originating line started the legacy of this great railroad. The B&O now forms part of the CSX System. | | | | | |
