Owned by Santa Fe, it displays the "Santa Fe" name across the top and road numbers along the bottom, also in Metallic Gold. These Pullman Heavyweight Parlor Cars were built by Pullman from the Pullman Plan # 3416. Santa Fe acquired heavyweight parlor cars that were never used in revenue service as originally built but rather rebuilt into custom Buffet-Parlor-Observation configurations during their life time. The introductions of the steel passenger cars brought the end of the luxurious, artisan-crafted and custom designed wooden cars which had been the rule since the 1880's. With the opening of the Pennsylvania Station in New York in 1910 and the Grand Central Terminal in 1931, passenger safety in the tunnels approaching these buildings demanded a more noncombustible material other than wood. | | | SERIES: | Unknown | BUILT: | Mid 1920's | TRUCKS: | 6-wheel Heavyweight Trucks with 36" Wheels | REGION: | Nationwide USA | ERA: | 1930's - 1950's | |
