This was the first time that aircraft carriers from opposing sides launched strikes against each other. The Japanese deployed 4 large carriers, the Kaga, Akagi, Soryu and Hiryu in an effort to sink 3 American carriers, the Enterprise, Hornet and the damaged Yorktown defending Midway Island. Although outnumbered the United States Navy decisively defeated the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) attack against the Midway Atoll, inflicting irreparable dameage on the Japanese carrier force and seizing the strategic initiative. This commemorative seven-car freight set features all seven of the aircraft carriers involved in the Battle of Midway. Each of these colorful cars feature a color rendering of the aircraft carrier, the carrier’s name and the date of the battle. . Each set is conveniently presented in a detailed decorative collector Tin Box. | | | | | | | |
