The first stone was laid by Charles Carroll who was the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence. It was the first common carrier and Class 1 Railroad in the United States. The B&O was the first railroad to offer scheduled freight and passenger service to the public and was the first railroad to publish a timetable. By the beginning of the Civil War the B&O owned more than 75 locomotives, 2,000 freight cars and more than 100 passenger cars. | | | | | |
