Union Pacific used these cabooses for the Conductors use during the latter part of the 19th Century. Use of cabooses began in the 1830's when railroads housed trainmen in shanties built onto box cars or flat cars. The caboose served several functions, one of which was as an office for the Conductor.. The Union Pacific Railway was incorporated on July 1sr, 1862, under an act of Congress. It was approved by President Lincoln, and it provided for the construction of railroads from the Missouri River to the Pacific as a war measure for the preservation of the Union. | | | | | |
