This 40' Standard Box Car with Single Door is painted black with white lettering and large white herald.  When serviced in 1972, it was repainted in this black scheme with the removal of the N&W ampersand.  The Norfolk & Western was a Class 1 railroad formed by more than 200 railroad mergers between 1838 and 1982.  Headquartered in Roanoke, Virginia for most of its 150 year existance.  It had a couple of nicknames including, "King Coal" and "British Railway of America".  The N&W became a major transporter of coal in the Pocahontas coal region.
