The Pennsylvania Railroad was a Class 1 railroad founded in 1846. It was headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was commonly referred to as the "Pennsy". It was originally a line from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh. Much of the PRR's early expansion was through the leasing or purchasing of additional railroads. Over the years it acquired, merged with or owned part of at least 800 other rail lines and companies. In decline in 1968, PRR merged with New York Central, however bankruptcy was filed within two years of the merger. The total assets were transferred to Conrail in 1976, which was itself broken up in 1999. | | | | | |
