The Lehigh & New England Railroad (LNE) was a Class 1 railroad located in the Northwestern District of the United States serving as a bridge line moving traffic from one major carrier to another. Declining traffic, first in Anthracite, then in Cement, made the LNE fate obvious to its owners. In 1960 the railroad, which was still solvent, petitioned for abandonment and was granted it in 1961. The Company holds the distinction of being the second notable US Railroad that was granted abandonment in its entirety. The first being the Ontarion & Western Railway. | | | |
