This 40' Standard Box Car with Single Door is painted bright aluminum with red lettering.  When the Alton Railroad recognized the need for head-end cars, they met this need in February of 1945 by purchasing ten of these light weight box cars.  The Mount Vernon Car Company of Mount Vernon, Illinois built these cars of aluminum supplied by the Reynolds Aluminum Company.  Using the light weight metal instead of steel was a common solution for this era for building head-ends cars.
